Do You Remember the Sigur Rós Trailer for Prince of Persia (2008)?

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

The Prince of Persia series has legions of hardcore fans, and our own Hassan Ali is among them. At the E3 gaming expo in 2008, Ubisoft delighted Prince of Persia fans with a trailer for Prince of Persia. This wasn’t the original Prince of Persia game (which came out in 1989), but another game simply titled Prince of Persia (which came out in 2008).

This trailer has always stood out to me because it’s so restrained. Instead of going for fast actions scenes set to electric guitar riffs or intense synthesizer sounds, the music is soft and emotionally impactful. This incredible track is actually “Sæglópur” by Icelandic band Sigur Rós.

The action is also mostly slow-mo, which does sort of the opposite of what your typical video game trailer attempts to do. Instead of showing you high-octane, fast-paced combat moments, this trailer seems to focus on the emotional impact the game might have.

It’s an interesting choice, and it’s one that makes the Prince of Persia trailer feel interesting even after more than a decade has passed.
