Star Wars Episode I: Racer Has a Physical Release on PS4 and Switch

Star Wars Episode I: Racer

The Phantom Menace introduced NASCAR-like racing to the Star Wars universe with an event called podracing. Whether you love the Star Wars prequels or hate them with a flaming passion, it’s hard to deny that Star Wars Episode I: Racer, a game based entirely on podracing, is really, really good.

The game originally came out for N64 and PC in May of 1999 to coincide with the release of The Phantom Menace. By the end of that year, it landed on Mac and Game Boy Color as well, and in 2000 it would make it to theDreamcast.

The game finally got a much-deserved re-release on June 23, 2020, for both the PS4 and Nintendo Switch. That release was digital-only, but fans of plastic boxes can finally rejoice, because Star Wars Episode I: Racer finally has a physical edition for PS4 and Switch.

This physical release is being handled by Limited Run Games, and, as their name implies, these cartridges (or discs if you opt for the PS4 version) are printed in small runs. If you want this game for your collection, you’d better act now. If Limited Run’s other releases are any indication, these won’t be available for long.

If you really want to plunk down some serious cash, there is also the extra-fancy Star Wars Episode I: Racer Classic Edition. This includes the physical copy of the game (for Switch or PS4), a N64-style box, a metal N64 cartridge (which is a collection piece only; it doesn’t actually run the game), and a reversible 18″ x 24″ poster. Collectors with fat wallets will definitely want the Classic Edition for their retro game display.

Star Wars Episode I: Racer Classic Edition

Honestly, the Classic Edition price isn’t even that bad. The physical version of Star Wars Episode I: Racer runs $59.99 for the Classic Edition, and $29.99 for the standard edition.

These went up for preorder on June 10, 2020, and at the time of this writing they are still available. Act fast, though, because as we mentioned earlier, these won’t be around for long.
