The Many, Many Re-releases of Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic 2

I’m tempted to argue that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the best Sonic offering on the Sega Genesis. I don’t know that it’s necessarily my favorite, but when I try to remove the personal bias of childhood nostalgia and examine these games objectively, Sonic 2 really does lead the pack in terms of quality, content, and innovation (it’s still no Sonic CD, though).

Needless to say, this game has been re-released countless times.

Well, not really countless, as somebody actually did count them all. YouTuber PatMac released a 30-minute video that dives into the history of every single version of Sonic 2 that has ever existed. In this beefy video, we learn a little bit about each of these ports in semi-chronological order.

Did you know there was a mashup version of the Sonic games on the failed handheld Game.com, and that this version was likely originally far more ambitious that the product that ended up launching? Did you that the first version of SOnic 2 wasn’t the 16-bit version we all know and love but the inferior 8-bit version for the Sega Master System?

To learn even more fascinating tidbits about the history of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and its many, many re-releases, you can watch the full video below.
