The Grim Fandango Soundtrack Makes Me Feel Like a Hardboiled Detective
I haven’t played Grim Fandango in more than a decade. There are parts of the game I recall with perfect clarity, and there are plenty of scenes I look back on fondly. Still, as time has passed, it’s gotten harder to recall its finer details.
Like how freaking amazing the soundtrack is.
I’ve been listening songs from Grim Fandango since Sony announced the remastered edition, and I can’t believe how fantastic they are. Each tune is jazzy, gritty, and full of personality. Sometimes the songs spark a fond memory, but the soundtrack is more than good enough to stand on its own.
Grim Fandango‘s star is a nightclub owner, but the soundtrack makes me feel like a hardboiled detective. When songs like “Blue Hector” play, I want to drink bourbon straight from the bottle and solve complicated mysteries.
When I listen to “Blue Casket Bop,” I want to grab my roscoe and rough up some mooks.
I love every song on this soundtrack, and I can’t believe I didn’t remember it. What other video game music gems have I forgotten? Were the clever puzzles of Bad Mojo complimented by a beautiful score? Are the Worms games full of kickass tunes?
Either way, I can’t wait to play — and hear — Grim Fandango when the remastered edition is released.
